Prof. Oussama Khatib visited METU Design Factory

Oussama Khatib, Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University visited METU Design Factory just before his seminar titled OCEAN ONE: A ROBOTIC AVATAR FOR OCEANIC DISCOVERY at Department of Electrics and Electronics Engineering.

Known for his research on methodologies and technologies in human-centered robotics including humanoid control architectures, human motion synthesis, interactive dynamic simulation, haptics, and human-friendly robot design, Professor Khatib will present his recent findings between 14:00-15:30 at Sevim Tan auditorium.

IDS-4 Applications are open

IDS-4 Applications are open

With support from the METU Technopolis and sponsored by industry and NGOs, METU Design Factory provides training, equipment and infrastructure to interdisciplinary student teams for collaborative design projects.
IDS brings students from different disciplines together in interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative products.

IDS-4 will be conducted as an elective course (ID403 Collaborative Design) offered to all departments in 2016 Fall semester.

Interdisciplinary Design Studio – 4

(ID403 – Collaborative Design)

During Interdisciplinary Design Studio 4, teams composed of graduate and undergraduate students from different disciplines developed innovative solutions for the problem areas proposed by firms and NGOs. Throughout IDS-4, design processes were conducted in accordance with workshops including design thinking techniques, seminars and knowledge and experience sharing of the faculty members from different disciplines.

TCON is an application that makes the vehicles special to the driver and passengers at the same time. After downloading to the mobile phone, TCON can automatically connect with the vehicle and combine the features, roads and passengers in common in three main areas: private music playback, news reading and space recommendation.

Rockids

Ramin Rasulzade • Nilay Nida Can • Yao Mingjian • İpek Öztürk • Oğuz Özdemir • Kübra Sena Şimşek • Melike Aydınlılar

The aim of Rockids is to tell the children of 6 to 10 years of the atmospheric flight experience in an engaging, instructive and amusing way. The design consists of 3 basic parts: a book, a physical toy, and an application to be used by this toy. The basics of flying in the book are told through an interactive story to children. Every chapter in the book is directed at the child’s play and practice so that the child can experience the principle described.

Utepils

The goal of the Utepils group is to cool the liquid in the bottle before making any changes to the bottle it is in. To this end, the high pressure CO2 gas has to be vented through a small hole in the tube it is in and the liquid inside the tube is cooled. In this easy-to-use device, the coolant is removed from the package and activated by pressing the button on the top of the tool when it is placed inside the bottle.

In this project, which targets SMEs in the manufacturing industry employing 50 or more employees, a phone application called K.O.B.İ (Alpha) was developed by determining the uncertainties that led to the inefficiency of SMEs. In the application that can be defined as “serious game”, it is aimed to increase awareness in this regard.

Design Thinking Training for METU Teknokent Entrepreneurs

Design Thinking Training for METU Teknokent Entrepreneurs

On 21-22 October 2016, METU Teknokent’s incubation companies were educated on design thinking.

Participants had the opportunity to practice six basic phases of design thinking: understanding, observation, perspective development, idea development, model development and testing.

Participants who redefined the problem identified in the training through face-to-face interview with the users, prototyped the solutions they developed.

The Artifex group has focused on the aesthetics of the electric lines, which until now have only been seen as a infrastructure problem. With this project, a parametric design has been proposed, stabilizing the values of the legislation,
reducing the electromagnetic field generated by the conductor wires, increasing the night visibility of the warning spheres, and providing a new aesthetic understanding of the cityscapes.

BreakEng

Abdullah Yusuf Tatlı • Elif Nur Bilir • İnci Tuğçe Üçkök • Lilyana Yazirlıoğlu • Meltem Düzgün

Because of the perception that engineering is a male profession, women are not adequately represented in engineering. Our main goal as the BreakEng group is to break social stereotypes about the engineering profession in high school students. For this purpose, a game proposal has been introduced in which the students can learn the engineering profession in an interactive way to bring up the field and role models for each class and student.

İmece

Mahmut Burak Atasever • Duygu Vatan • Özcan Keklik • Esra Reis • Mehmet Alper Kuyumcu • Zeynep Yılmaz

In order to make a “safer tractor design” by the team of İmece, a solution to tractor overturns has been developed and a moving weight system consisting of information, guidance and intervention steps has been developed. With this
project, a system consists of mechanical and social aspects has been provided while aiming of raising awareness of the farmer.

Motus Magnus

Alperen Tüğen • Aysun Bolat • Bahar Aydemir • Buğrahan Gülcüler • Sezin Sarıca • Hüseyin Uğur Genç • Zeynep Ece Şahin

The MotusMagnus group presented a “smart vest” solution proposal, in the sense that most of the community has a dysfunction due to a desk work. This vest seeks to create a collective culture in smart casual offices, thanks to a
mobile application that can be used together.
