The first stage of this contest, the concept idea phase, continues until November 11, 2017.

Prof. Oussama Khatib visited METU Design Factory

Prof. Oussama Khatib visited METU Design Factory

Oussama Khatib, Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University visited METU Design Factory just before his seminar titled OCEAN ONE: A ROBOTIC AVATAR FOR OCEANIC DISCOVERY at Department of Electrics and Electronics Engineering.

Known for his research on methodologies and technologies in human-centered robotics including humanoid control architectures, human motion synthesis, interactive dynamic simulation, haptics, and human-friendly robot design, Professor Khatib will present his recent findings between 14:00-15:30 at Sevim Tan auditorium.

With support from the METU Technopolis and sponsored by industry and NGOs, METU Design Factory provides training, equipment and infrastructure to interdisciplinary student teams for collaborative design projects.
IDS brings students from different disciplines together in interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative products.

IDS-4 will be conducted as an elective course (ID403 Collaborative Design) offered to all departments in 2016 Fall semester.

IDS-3 Closing Ceremony

IDS-3 Closing Ceremony

Closing Ceremony for IDS-3 was held on 20 January 2017 at Design Factory. Five different groups containing different disciplines had presented their innovative solutions after a full term working in public. After each group’s 10 minutes presentations, a question-answer session had started to understand the solutions deeper.

MotusMagnus team’s project, sponsored by Autodesk, was designing a smart jacket to straighten the posture of people. Güven Hastanesi sponsored Smoke on the Water to develop an application which can be used by people trying to quit smoking. The design process for an aesthetic electricity pylon system was conducted by Artifex, sponsored by Miteng. İmece designed a system to control the risk of rollover of tractors by sponsorship of Türk Traktör. There was a social responsibility project as well. BreakEng designed a board game to break social stereotypes about the engineering profession in high school students.

Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) is Growing

Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) is Growing

The Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) continues to grow, bringing together innovation centers that operate within the university and research institutes where the METU Design Factory is a member. The DFGN allows for the realization of radical innovations through cross-cultural and cross-border collaboration, independent of time frames, through the collaboration language and methods offered.

The network, which is a member of 13 innovation centers operating in different countries of the world, provides hands-on training for real and challenging industrial projects for five continental students; appropriate environment for the development of new ideas, together with leading academics and other initiatives for businesses; for researchers, they provide interdisciplinary research opportunities with industry partners.

Representatives of member centers will meet in Geneva for International Design Factory Week 2016 events on 12-16 December and develop cooperation plans and projects between centers.

Design Thinking Training for METU Teknokent Entrepreneurs

On 21-22 October 2016, METU Teknokent’s incubation companies were educated on design thinking.

Participants had the opportunity to practice six basic phases of design thinking: understanding, observation, perspective development, idea development, model development and testing.

Participants who redefined the problem identified in the training through face-to-face interview with the users, prototyped the solutions they developed.
